NEWTOWNSTEWART PUPILS POWERS THROUGH COMPETITION

Northern Ireland Electricity’s annual angling safety competition has been won by a bright spark from St Patrick’s Primary School.

Niall McNulty, aged 11, was presented with a pair of binoculars as a reminder to always ‘look up and look out’ when fishing or playing close to electricity lines. He won the competition by knowing that anglers should always check the riverbank for overhead powerlines and to always carry his fishing rod by his side, parallel to the ground

When presenting the prize Margaret Gallagher, safety officer at Northern Ireland Electricity, said, “Through NIE’s Kidzsafe programme, we spend a lot of time talking to children throughout the school year on taking care around power lines. It’s particularly important to remind children and parents of this before the summer holidays.”

“At this time of the year we’re all spending much more time outside, so we want to make sure that children are aware of their surroundings and check for dangers. It was great to be able to talk to some of the other pupils at the school. Hopefully Niall’s win will be a good reminder for all of them that they should always look out for electricity lines and equipment when fishing or around the farm, flying kites or even pitching tents.”
